Gingerbread Spice Mix

Homemade gingerbread spice mix

Gingerbread Spice is something that no gingerbread or gingerbread cookies can do without, and therefore no winter or Christmas season. It is also a fantastic addition to tea, mulled wine, coffee or hot chocolate. It can be an addition to savory dishes or other desserts. It is very easily available in stores, but flour, sugar or cocoa are often added to it. That is why it is best to make it yourself at home. This will give you the mixture that suits you best.
For your convenience, I have given the amount of spices in teaspoons, but you can easily calculate the proportions if you use whole spices and not ground and use a scale. It is best to use a coffee grinder to grind the spices.

TIP: How to clean a coffee grinder?
If your coffee grinder is dirty, grind a spoonful of dry rice. This will easily remove any coffee residue from it. You can repeat the grinding of rice 2-3 times, each time pouring out the dirty rice and pouring in fresh rice, until the grinder is completely clean.

What does gingerbread spice consist of? What spices are added to gingerbread? What should a spice mix contain?
Spices that can be found in gingerbread spice are:

  • Cinnamon
  • Cloves
  • Nutmeg
  • Ginger
  • Anise
  • Star anise
  • Coriander seeds
  • Black pepper
  • Allspice
  • Cardamom
  • Fennel seeds

It is very rare to find all of these spices in ready-made mixtures. Every gingerbread spice should at least contain cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. A good gingerbread spice should also contain pepper, anise and ginger.

What gingerbread spice should you buy? Which gingerbread spice is the best?
When choosing gingerbread spice, you need to read its composition! What to focus on? It is worth finding answers to the questions: what spices are in the mixture, how many types of spices are in the mixture, what percentage of spices does the package contain, whether fillers were used, e.g. flour, sugar, cocoa, citrus peel. Some companies, although tempting with a low price or large package, actually sell flour with a small amount of spices. As a result, such a spice is much more expensive than the more ‘expensive’ package of 100% spice.

Gingerbread spice is vegan and gluten-free.
The proportions given below make 105 g of gingerbread spice.
